When I worked for Plessey Semiconductors (1968-1982) I was, among other things, responsible for Application Notes and magazine articles. One of the was the 'G4CLF SSB Transceiver" using the Plessey SL1600 Series integrated circuits. This was very widely built and several companies offered kits for it. When the original design was followed exactly the kits worked well, but unfortunately some companies changed either the circuit design (to use components that they could supply) or the PC board layout and some of these changes had unfortunate effects on its performance.
If you have a question about the G4CLF Transceiver (or its predecessor, the G3ZVC Transceiver) please email me. I am very busy and cannot guarantee to solve your problem (or even to respond very quickly, as I travel a lot) but I will try to be helpful.
A version of the original Application Note is here.
I always QSL when asked. If G4CLF owes you a QSL please let me know.
